The first thing that catches the eye is the picture frame, hung askew — one of those modern pieces about love, which does not exist in this place and never has.
After that, the room arrives in pieces. The human odour still in the bed. The pink sheets, stained red, shoved to one side. Mildew and rot. Dirty tiles. Empty bottles, empty glasses, the bedlight bent over. And money — money everywhere. So it was not a money thing this time. Trinkets. A picture frame on the floor. A magazine. Then the blood, pooled and partly dried, run out from under the bed.
Pull the bed away from the wall and there's a map down there — a map to somewhere strange you don't know. Later you'll check, and it is absolutely nowhere. Not on any map.
The floorboard in the corner is broken. Lift it out and the hollow gives up a curved, ornate knife. The murder weapon? No — this one isn't bloodied. Though the compartment it hid in has seen blood before. Ancient. Dried to a reddish brown.
Then you notice the hole in the wall, behind the frame. Someone had been watching what happened here — and was discovered.
A witness. Or more.
Love Hotel is the opening case of the Brick Forensics series — a room built as evidence rather than as display. Nothing here is staged for prettiness. Every object is placed to be found, and every object is a clue: the askew heart, the cash no one came back for, the printed map to a country that isn't real, the prised floorboard, the watcher's hole behind the frame. What you make of them is the case.
The room is carried by colour doing forensic work. The bed is shaped almost entirely from coral curved slopes, soft and rounded against the hard orthogonal grid of the walls and tiled floor. The blood is built, not printed — translucent-red round plates and tiles laid into the floorboards so the pooling reads as depth, half-dried at the edges where it meets the grey subfloor exposed under the lifted boards. Printed tiles do the storytelling: the treasure-map tile with its compass and red X, the "EXTRA!" newspaper, the heart in the crooked wall frame.
Two pieces of the build are mechanisms rather than decoration. The corner floorboard lifts out as a unit to reveal the hidden compartment and the ornate knife beneath it. And the wall behind the frame is built around a void — the watcher's hole — so the picture frame isn't only askew, it's covering something.
